• 3D (potential) temperature / salinity (thetao / so)
• (Net) heat flux / ocean heat uptake (hfds)
• Sea ice area (or extent) / volume (sic / sit)
• Sea surface height (+standard deviation) (zos)
• Mixed layer depth (mlotst)
• Zonal/meridional velocity (uo / vo)
• Zonal/meridional wind stress (tauuo / tauvo)

Potential other diagnostics

• AMOC
• Barotropic streamfunction
• Meridional heat transport
• Volume transport; through, e.g., Drake Passage or 47°N

ICON-XPP CMORizer

• PR: Add on-the-fly CMORizer for ICON-XPP #2659
• Variable mapping table ("extra facets"): this should be sufficient for most variables.
• Actual fix code: necessary for more complex variable derivations

I added a branch, with the changes we did for ICON-O so far: https://github.com/ESMValGroup/ESMValCore/tree/icon-o
Not sure if all of this should go in the XPP PR but with a branch it is easier to find the changes.

In particular:

• esmvalcore/cmor/_fixes/icon/icon.py changes for the depth coordinate for Oyr, Omon and Oday variables
• esmvalcore/preprocessor/_regrid.py removing dimensions with length one for the preprocessor extract_level (need to be checked that it does not cause problems with other data)
• esmvalcore/config-developer.yml change for the path of the ICON-o data I used, should be probably removed later

Thanks Katja, that's fantastic! I guess it would be best to merge this into the icon-xpp branch because I moved some code around in there and want to avoid ugly merge conflicts. We can talk about the details next week. Cheers!
