Corrupted `glac_name` in shapefile export

The shapefiles produced for bulk download (https://daacdata.apps.nsidc.org/pub/DATASETS/nsidc0272_GLIMS_v1/) and on demand via the browser (https://integration.glims.org/maps/download.html) contain corrupted values in column glac_name. For example, "Schw\x84rze-E" for G007793E45952N. Interestingly, it is correctly "Schwärze E" for G007794E45945N.

This seems to be an issue with shapefile export because the GML files do not have this issue. To test, download https://integration.glims.org/maps/download.html?download_type=extent&clause=7.777697248966433,45.94810423889328,7.802663250477052,45.95652578440112 as shapefile and GML and compare.

Thanks for the report. This seems to be a problem of encoding in the database; the same escaped version of the umlauted a can be seen at
https://www.glims.org/maps/info.html?anlys_id=86696

Actually, it seems to be correctly encoded in UTF-8 in the database. Here's a direct query using the command-line utility psql:

I have shown that the encoding for the glacier name for ID G007793E45952N was not UTF-8. (And I realize I queried the wrong ID in the comment above.) I think I've fixed the problem now, and I have further identified about 320 names with similar issues. The problem stems from data being contributed in other encodings (e.g. latin1) and them not being converted in the ingest process. I am working to correct as many of the identified names as I can.
