About This Repository

This repository provides technical responses to recurring misconceptions about the Accessible Perceptual Contrast Algorithm (APCA) and visual contrast research.

APCA is the candidate contrast method under evaluation for W3C Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 3.0. As with any significant change to an established standard, there has been discussion and debate within the accessibility community. Some of that discussion has included claims that are factually incorrect or based on misunderstandings of the relevant vision science. The documents in this repository address those claims with citations to the published research record.

We maintain an open discussion forum for questions, comments, and technical critique. Good-faith engagement is always welcome.

About the Name

The repo name "TuttleAndButtle" is a reference to Terry Gilliam's 1985 film Brazil, in which a bureaucratic error (a beetle falling into a teletype, changing "Tuttle" to "Buttle") sets the plot in motion. The film is a meditation on what happens when large institutions prioritize process over outcomes.

If you haven't seen it, the Criterion Collection edition of the European cut is recommended.
