Description

Sometimes we're lazy and we pass vague, simple prompts. This often results in bad downstream performance and increase development cost (time, trials and errors, LLM API usage).

I propose a Meta-Prompter (prompting a prompt) to refine vague, simple prompts into clear, detailed ones that are readily usable to pass on to downstream agents of other Roo modes.

I attached the definition for this custom 🪄 Meta-Prompter mode below.

I have analyzed this issue and explored the codebase. Here is my proposed implementation plan:

Summary: Add a "Meta-Prompter" mode as a new built-in default mode in Roo Code.

Approach:

1. Add a new entry to DEFAULT_MODES in packages/types/src/mode.ts with slug meta-prompter, using the role definition, custom instructions, and tool groups from the attached YAML (read-only tools via groups: ["read"]).

2. The mode definition will closely follow the YAML attachment but adapted to fit the existing ModeConfig pattern used by the other 5 built-in modes (architect, code, ask, debug, orchestrator).

3. Update any existing tests that assert on the number or content of default modes.

Key details from the YAML:

• Slug: meta-prompter
• Name: Meta-Prompter
• Tool groups: ["read"] (read-only access, similar to Ask mode but without MCP)
• Role: Expert prompt engineer that refines vague prompts into precise, actionable prompts for other Roo modes
• Custom instructions: A structured 5-step workflow (interview, read files, draft refined prompt, explain changes, offer revision)

Open question: The YAML only includes the read tool group. Should the Meta-Prompter also have mcp access (like Ask mode does), so it can query external resources when refining prompts? I will default to ["read", "mcp"] to match Ask mode unless you prefer otherwise.

Please mention @roomote in a comment saying that you approve this plan, and I will proceed with the implementation.

Thanks for the updated YAML with the string formatting fixes, @votrinhan88! I've seen your comment and will proceed with implementing the Meta-Prompter mode using your corrected definition file. I'll open a PR to share progress shortly.

Opened a draft PR with my attempt at implementing the Meta-Prompter mode: #11784

The implementation uses the corrected YAML from @votrinhan88, adding it as a new built-in default mode in DEFAULT_MODES. I also added mcp to the tool groups (alongside read) to match the Ask mode pattern, since MCP access can help when refining prompts. All tests, lint, and type checks pass. Feedback welcome!

Roo already has the enhance prompt feature that you can use for this:

Thanks for the clarification @rossdonald. I did not notice that there is already a built-in "Enhance Prompt" feature.

Having said that, there is missing potential that prompts can be much improved if we can interactively discuss with Roo, and make use of mid-conversation context.
I have personally seen a productivity boost with this custom mode.

Is it possible for this to be shared to the Mode Marketplace anyhow?

I believe the Roo team maintains the mode marketplace with a list of common modes but they rarely add new ones.
