Installation on debian / raspberry pi does not install all dependencies

I installed executing the systemd script on an old raspberry pi 2 with a mostly fresh debian and had to install
apt install -y libffi-dev libavcodec-dev libavfilter-dev libavformat-dev libavutil-dev libavdevice-dev libswscale-dev python3-dev libjpeg-dev
manually. I think these should be included in the install script.

Is this a 32-bit OS? I think that the Python dependency av which we use, does not provide 32-bit wheels.

Yes, this is still armv7 / 32 bit. What you write makes sense, after installing the dependencies, it compiled for a very long time (including dependencies like numpy, av,...) but eventually, I got a working installation and sendspin works like a charm also on this older hardware. I don't know how many of those are still around, but if this is a significant amount, it might make sense to guide the users a bit (either in the README or the script) - what do you think?

I seem to have an similar issue. I installed sendspin on my raspberry pi 64bit with uv and can not start it, because of a missing pulsectl-asyncio, but I do not find a way to install this manually. Where do I get this package?

That's a pity. 3/5 of my snapcast clients are Raspbery PI zero 1.1's. Been working well with snapcast for years. I wanted to try upgrading to sendspin but it's not gone smoothly at all. I did eventually manage to get it building with pip but using uv or the supplied script fails building zeroconf.

This is resolved for me, after the failed start of sendspin I got the message PulseAudio system library failed to load: libpulse.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. Install it with: sudo apt-get install libpulse0 and with installing this sendspin worked.

Revisiting this:

• On the initial set of packages in this ticket, since they're required only for compilation of the python dependency on 32-bit systems, I recommend we detect if we're on a 32-bit system and know these will be needed, and then offer to install them.
• For libpulse0 in my testing this library is not on any of my sendspin systems, so I did some looking into why this might be occurring.
  • First, the error path only occurs if PulseAudio libraries are present. This might be desired, of course, since it's required for hardware volume control.
  • Second, the error should be caught and ignored, so that feature can fall back to software volume control, which is already done in other cases. I recommend we do this regardless (as opposed to crashing).
  • Third, the installer should probably set systems up for supporting hardware volume control, or at least give users the option. Pulseaudio libraries are required, including libpulse0, so these could be optionally installed. I'll need to research this more and test it but I think it's a good solution.
  • Question: do we always want to install Pulseaudio libraries packages as a dependency so hardware volume control works by default, or should this be up to the user? (Note that the full PulseAudio daemon appears to be required, which is a rather large commitment especially for lightweight systems, hence leaving it up to the user and accepting the tradeoff of software volume control might be reasonable)
