Better documentation of "Status" and "Use Count" on managed files page

I upgraded a Drupal 7 site to Backdrop CMS recently and found I had over 3000 images for which the "Use Count" was empty. If "Use Count" is empty, editors can not use the image, even though it is in the managed files directory.

This reminds me that discussions about file "status" and "use count" come up periodically and many people don't understand these columns.

I'm not aware of such a page in documentation. I started a blog post on this topic, but maybe a docs page would be better.

I did not find an existing page on this topic, am I missing something?
