research:
- name: Spatial Hypermedia for Visually Impaired (WARP V.I.P.)
description: |
Much of our understanding of how to navigate information on the web comes from cues found in layout like size, color and position. This research looks at how visually impaired people use and understand this information implicit in the two-dimensional spatial layouts of Web pages when using a one-dimensional speech rendering from a screenreader. Lab studies were conducted with both sighted and visually impaired participants to understand how they interpreted different types of common web page layouts. This data was compared and is being used to design, develop and evaluate an adaptive spatial hypermedia interface for visually impaired people that can allow them to utilize these types of layout cues.
- name: The eCommentary Machine (“eComma”)
description: |
The eCommentary Machine is a web application designed by the Digital Writing & Research Lab that allows students to build and share collaborative commentaries on texts. I conducted a usability evaluation of the entire application. This included developing scenarios of use and lab testing of users on multiple types of texts, as well as real-world observations and focus groups in classrooms where eComma was being used in teaching. The findings were summarized into a set of design recommendations that were incorporated into the upcoming version.
- name: Understanding ICT Use by Medical Professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa
description: |
A combination of research methods meant to provide a broad picture of the state of information and communication technology (ICT) use by healthcare professionals working in Sub-Saharan Africa. A numer of areas were covered, including infrastructure, policy and existing commercial and research applications. First, a comprehensive literature review was conducted on all available research for applicable topics. Then a survey was disseminated among all types of healthcare workers in the region in order to gain a primary source perspective. This project was meant to inform the design of the eMicrobes project, a digital library of infectious disease reference materials.
- name: "TIME: Timeline Interactive Multimedia Experience"
description: |
The TIME project was designed to visualize a timeline of social media about a specific event at close to real time. The system was designed to inform and assist users about current happenings at a large-scale event such as a conference or music festival where many things happen at once. A large multitouch display was mounted into a tilt-angle kiosk frame in order to facilitate standing use by one or more users. The application was designed as a web application composed of a PHP component that fetched data through APIs and archived it into a MySQL database, and a jQuery web component that rendered the data on the timeline. Initial lab evaluations found the touch interface to be very intuitive and enjoyable for the users, who successfully used search and other features.
