Vertically oriented images often seem to pose channel detection problems

Standard selected vertical channel detection routine `alternate` seem to have problems with vertical images (e.g. `?rotate=90`). Reported by LH. `recursive` works better, however `alternate` should be checked and probably be fixed. Current workaround – use tunable:

```
