Currently I am unable to compile oursql for python 3.7 (yes, I tried update cython to latest version). Last blog post is almost 2 years old. Is project still maintained?

I find it harder and harder to defend using oursql in our software stack. Maybe the maintainer can transfer maintainership to someone who wants to keep oursql alive? I might have to switch to another MySQL/DBAPI library.

What alternative are folks using, out of curiosity?

I think I would switch to the DBAPI connectors that are used for Django by default (for both MySQL and PostgreSQL). Due to the popularity of Django I guess those connectors will be used by many other people and the chance that they will be kept up-to-date and working is probably the highest.

Which fills me with sadness, because I've been using oursql for years with much pleasure.

Thanks for the suggestion @motoom . Yeah we’ve been using oursql for six years or more. Seems a shame to see it become stale.

I recommend switching to PostgreSQL- half kidding, I know it's not an option for most people with established projects in MySQL/Mariadb :>

The reason I am posting this is to mention that this package came to my attention via agronholm/sqlacodegen#126 which suggests pymysql as a viable alternative to oursql. Maybe that's the alternative you're looking for @gsmethells ?

I only use PostgreSQL at this point because of the amazing development it has seen over the years. It seems MySQL is officially doomed under Oracle as of a few years ago. I don't have much faith in mariadb ever reaching the maturity that PostgreSQL has. My unsolicited $.02, but hopefully the suggestion to try pymysql is helpful for someone here

Thanks for the suggestion of pymysql and your two cents on PostgreSQL @mzpqnxow ... I’ll keep that bit under advisement. Postgres would certainly be where we’d go if the MariaDB project ever went pear shaped.

Django uses mysqlclient, docs at https://mysqlclient.readthedocs.io/, which you import using import MySQLdb. mysqlclient is written as a C extension to Python and approx. two times faster than pure python mysql connectors. Available for both Python3 and Python2.
