+ "text": "Nationally there is a movement in high schools to offer “data science” as an alternative to algebra 2 level math, and to enhance traditional science courses with data-related tasks and spreadsheet skills. This is music to our ears in the STEMcoding project where we work to re-imagine introductory science and math courses!\n\nThe first STEMcoding data science activity was released back in 2017 with what would eventually become our Earth Day Hour of Code activity. We’ve been building data science content ever since with the help of multiple grants for curriculum development.\nNow we are ready to share our curriculum and Spreadsheet with the world! For two weeks starting July 7, 2026 we will offer online and hybrid (in person + online) training to teach this curriculum.\n\nOur new continuing education course is open to teachers everywhere. The online only option will meet daily via Zoom while the hybrid option will meet in person at OSU Marion for July 7 & 8 and online for July 9 - 17 (except for the weekend). The cost of the course includes software for you to use in your classroom. There is an early bird discount, so sign up soon! Upon completing the course, participants will receive a certificate stating they have completed up to 3.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).\nOur high school data science curriculum emphasizes spreadsheet skills with Google Sheets and Excel. Importantly, our activities align with the intro level Excel industry credential so that students in a year long data science course with our curriculum will be ready to take the certification exam (which is not as crushingly difficult as other industry credential exams).\nImportant note for Teachers in Texas: You can get our online training for free in late June through our partnership with WeTeach_CS at the University of Texas at Austin.
