Closing and opening the message sidebar makes it's content disappear and shuts down the apps

this is unexpected and confusing.

The content should stay persistent in the sidebar and you should be able to close and open it without pausing the app instances in the process.

may be slightly related to #52

Probably easy to fix by just display: none;
