If we assume autoconf >= 2.69, then it may also be reasonable to assume, for example, automake >= 1.11.

Would you prefer to keep these 4 commits as they are?

To me, either of the following would also be reasonable:

  • squash the 2 Autoconf-related commits into one, leaving 3 commits in total: one for Autoconf, one for Automake, and one for the INSTALL file
  • squash all changes into a single commit

2.69 is from 2012, should be fine.
2.59 is from 2003, probably nobody is testing if it is really
still working.

I squashed in into two commits. This way it should be easy to use git bisect in case issues occur.
