Merge policy

As a rule of thumb:

  • PRs with several commits that make sense individually and that
    all compile are preferentially merged into master.
  • PRs with disorganized commits are very likely to be squash-rebased.

Many thanks for the review. Most comments answered. Note that if this gets merged, it will be checked once again because the prob_lang PR (#1712) depends on it. It will therefore be rebased and this will be the occasion to detect more issues if any.
