OpenGov Bangladesh

A open-source government design system for Bangladesh, forked from the GOV.UK Design System built by the UK Government Digital Service.

What this is

OpenGov Bangladesh is a component library and design language for building accessible, consistent, and trustworthy digital government services in Bangladesh. It provides styles, components, and patterns that teams can use to build services that work for everyone — regardless of device, connection speed, or ability.

This project is not affiliated with any government body. It is a community initiative.

Why this exists

Bangladesh has 180 million people and no shared design standard for government digital services. Every ministry, agency, and portal builds its own interface from scratch, producing inconsistent, inaccessible, and difficult-to-use services. The result is a fragmented digital public sector that fails the people it is supposed to serve.

The GOV.UK Design System solved this problem for the United Kingdom. Canada, New Zealand, and Australia have since forked and adapted it for their own governments. Bangladesh has not.

OpenGov Bangladesh is that fork. The goal is to build the foundation — a shared design language, a component library, Bangla typography support, and accessibility standards — so that anyone building a government-facing service in Bangladesh has something real to start from.

What we are building

  • A component library adapted for Bangladeshi government services
  • Full Bangla (Bengali script) typography and font support
  • Accessibility compliance built in, not bolted on
  • Documentation and usage guidelines in English and Bangla
  • A reference implementation that teams can fork and deploy

Status

This project is in early development. The foundation is a fork of GOV.UK Frontend. Adaptation for Bangladesh is ongoing.

We welcome contributions of all kinds: code, design, translation, documentation, and feedback.

How to contribute

Contribution guidelines are coming soon. In the meantime, open an issue to share feedback, flag problems, or propose ideas. Pull requests are welcome.

The bigger goal

If this design system gains traction, the intent is to seek adoption by government agencies and eventually advocate for it to become an official standard for Bangladeshi government digital services. That is a long road. It starts here.
